Kothis, Hijras, Giriyas and Others
Course: Masters in Fine Art, Photography (with distinction), The University for the Creative Arts (UCA), Farnham
Singh’s photographic practice is informed by thirteen years of HIV/AIDS work and community activism in India. He is interested in the representation of gender and sexualities, relationships, recovery, loss and desire while questioning some notions of portraiture. The Kothis (effeminate, underprivileged, homosexual men), Hijras (eunuch), Giriyas (partners of Kothi and Hijra) are indigenous terms used by the communities in their own dialect to define their different and particular sexual identities.
